Growing Popularity of Acupuncture in the United States
Acupuncture has been a proven method of medical treatment that evolved out of the careful observation of the human body. It originated in China over 3,000 years ago and soon expanded to other Asian countries. In the past century, acupuncture has been adopted in Europe and the Soviet Union, and was finally introduced in the United States in the late nineteenth century.
Despite its mainstream presence in Asia, acupuncture became renowned here only after New York Times foreign correspondent James Reston wrote a first-person account of the painkilling effects of acupuncture following his emergency appendectomy in China in 1971. Since then the popularity of this time-honored technique has soared in the United States; tens of millions of visits are made each year.
The World Health Organization (WHO) of the United Nations has cited acupuncture as treatment for over 100 health conditions. Acupuncture needles are classified as medical devices by the FDA.
People seek acupuncture treatment for ailments that are as simple as the common cold and quitting smoking to those as complex as infertility, paralysis, and some others that are not fully helped by conventional medical methods. Professional athletes are opting for acupuncture rather than physical therapy and surgery. Celebrities choose acupuncture for facial treatments and to help maintain their figures. Aside from its widespread success, acupuncture continues to gain popularity also for its holistic and natural way of healing. Back to top
What is Acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese method of healing that uses needles and/or other stimuli (e.g. pressure, vacuum, electricity, heat) on the body to balance the flow of vital energy, Qi (pronounced /chee/). By restoring the balance of Qi in the body, acupuncture not only heals disease and pain, but also promotes the wellness of a healthy person. Acupuncture is a natural and holistic treatment that has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective therapy for many conditions and is practiced in many countries around the world today.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theorizes that Qi is continuously generated and flows through the body in distinct traceable paths called Meridians. There are twelve classic Meridians: lung, large intestine, stomach, spleen-pancreas, heart, small intestine, bladder, kidney, pericardium, triple-heater, gall bladder, and liver. TCM states that these Meridians are related to these internal organs and specific bodily functions. They extend from the inner organs to the surface of the body.
In a healthy person, Qi flows freely and abundantly through Meridians, resulting in a state of harmony in the body. However, when this harmony is disrupted by internal or external factors such as stress, injury, diet, or weather, Qi becomes obstructed or deficient. This imbalance is the root of all illness and pain. In Chinese there is a saying, "There is no pain if there is free flow; if there is pain, there is no free flow." Acupuncture treatment addresses these blockages, deficiencies, and imbalance by using needles to stimulate specific points along the Meridians called Acupoints. Targeting these Acupoints restores the free flow of Qi to restore balance and health to the body.
Electromagnetic research has confirmed the locations of Acupoints and Meridians. Modern research and experimentation have also discovered that acupuncture relieves pains through simultaneously increasing the body's tolerance to pain and triggering the body to release endorphins and enkephalins, natural pain-killing chemicals. Acupuncture has proven to be so effective in stifling pain that it has been used in place of anesthesia during major surgeries.
Research has also found that acupuncture stimulation can fortify blood and energy to nourish body organs. This influences the nervous and the secretive systems to balance hyperactive or hypoactive organs and systems, restoring them to their optimum conditions. It can also bolster the body's immune system to help prevent and fight diseases. Back to top

Is it safe?
Acupuncture is a safe, natural, effective form of healing with no side-effects. Acupuncture treatments are drug-free so there is no risk of developing drug dependencies. However, you should always inform us of any pre-existing conditions, current medications, and pregnancy. We will evaluate your specific medical history to ensure the best treatment plan for you. Yin Yang Chinese Acupuncture Center uses only pre-sterilized, disposable needles. The treatment areas on the skin are sterilized to eliminate the possibility of transmitting communicable diseases.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments required depends on the duration, severity, and nature of your condition. As with any form of medical care, positive attitude and lifestyle are factors that can change the course and outcome of your treatment. For minor, acute ailments, it may take only one treatment to see improvement. For more significant, chronic conditions, it may take six or more consecutive treatments.
We recommend that a patient begin with two treatments per week. As the patient?s condition improves, the treatment frequency may be reduced. For general health maintenance, the recommendation is four treatments per year. In many cases, herbs may be used in conjunction with acupuncture. We will discuss your treatment plan in detail during your free consultation.

Does it hurt?
Acupuncture is performed using hair-thin needles, only 1/10 the thickness of hypodermic needles, so treatments are relatively painless. In addition, Yin Yang Chinese Acupuncture Center uses extra smooth needles to minimize any discomfort of treatment. The majority of people experience no pain upon the insertion of needles. A small population may feel a slight pricking sensation or soreness. During the treatment, you may also experience soreness or tingling. This is normal and is caused by energy flow changes in your body.

What to expect during treatment
During treatment, you will be either laying down or sitting up, depending on the location of the treatment Acupoints on your body. Although Acupoints exist all over the body, those on the arms and legs are most often used. Acupoints on your torso, scalp, and ears may also be used.
The needles are inserted and left in place for about 30 minutes. During this time you may experience a slight tingling as Qi flow is altered. For the most part, there is a feeling of general relaxation. If heat or electrical stimulation is incorporated during your session, you will feel a gentle pulsing at the Acupoints.
We may also use ear seeds to prolong your treatment. These seeds are taped discreetly to Acupoints on your outer ear and are left in place for 3-4 days. We will provide you with more instructions should ear seeds be appropriate for your treatment.

Eastern & Western medicine.
Acupuncture can be used in conjunction with Western medicine. The top medical schools in the United States, including Harvard, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and Columbia, offer acupuncture as part of their medical school curriculum. Western medical doctors refer patients for acupuncture treatment in growing numbers.
Most notably, Yin Yang Chinese Acupuncture Center has had enormous success with infertility patients undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Acupuncture can offset side effects of other treatments, such as nausea and fatigue from chemotherapy. It is used as analgesia for pain-control during and after surgery. Acupuncture can also boost your immune system to increase the effectiveness of other treatments.
